As small cars are now becoming really a hit of the season, some car critics are projecting a pretty bad situation for Opel in the upcoming years. Though Opel / Vauxhall are confident that they can produce a new minicar in Germany and still make a profit.

“The technology on which that car is made allows us to make it in Germany, and with this fact the production of new Adam will be profitable,” – said the head of Opel sales and marketing in an interview with the automotive press. Adam Opel supermini will be produced at the Opel plant in Eisenach (Germany), despite the fact that most automakers transferred their production of the small cars to Eastern Europe, where wages are much lower.

To reduce the cost of the engineering part of Adam Opel was designed based on a shortened version of the subcompact Opel Corsa. In addition, Adam will share with Corsa the same choice of color options, and body elements will be produced on the same assembly line, which also helps to reduce costs. Moreover the cars will receive the same powertrains. Adam will use some of the engines of the Corsa range: 1.2-and 1.4-liter petrol engines, plus two versions of the three-cylinder, turbocharged 1.0-liter engine with direct injection. Adam will flow into the showrooms of the European dealers already this month.
