Factory workers in the German city of Bochum refused to accept the restructuring plan proposed by the concern GM. Opel representatives reported this week that the workers at the plant in Bochum, refused to approve the previously agreed trade union and company management restructuring plan. In the beginning of the month they had reached an agreement to guarantee the preservation of jobs in all four Opel plants in Germany, in return for the closing assembly site in Bochum by the end of 2016 and the freezing of wages in the near future. In early 2017 the assembly of cars had to stop there, but GM did not plan to completely close the plant, assuming to leave there the production of automotive components and logistics center.

However, 76% of employees in Bochum voted against plans of GM, finding the company’s management promises obscure, besides, they did not satisfy the temporary freeze on wages. “I think the result is an expression of confidence in the leadership vote of Opel – too many mistakes and false promises were made over the past eight years,” said the head of the local branch of the trade union IG Metall.

In turn, the director of the factory in Bochum regretted “the loss of good opportunities,” and said that no further negotiations with the staff will happen. Thus, the production of Zafira Tourer in Bochum will be discontinued at the end of next year, and the plant will be closed.
